An IPDC-Deltares online session, featuring lessons learned from around the world
Join us on Tuesday 25 November from 9:30 – 11:00 CET for an online session organised by Deltares and the IPDC on adaptation efforts in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna, Mekong, and Nile mega deltas, focusing on an integrated understanding of deltaic biophysical systems and their linkages to livelihoods.
About the session
What lessons can we learn from deltas around the world? This online session, organised by the IPDC and Deltares, will reflect on the most recent scientific efforts in linking biophysical system developments and livelihood in deltas. It will also share lessons learned from the adaptation efforts in some of the world’s most important mega-deltas, including the Ganges Brahmaputra Meghna, the Mekong, and the Nile mega-deltas
A biophysical systems understanding
Gaining a comprehensive biophysical systems understanding of a delta – from its source to its sink – is a key primary step to developing sustainable adaptation pathways in deltas. This session aims to bridge the complex variabilities of the biophysical deltaic systems to the livelihood of the population they serve, through relevant quantifiable socioeconomic assessments.
This session will:
The session will use lessons learned from three global mega-deltas to find synergies and exchange lessons learned in adaptation planning. The session will consider:
- An integrated system understanding for the world deltas;
- Climate migration patterns in the Mekong Delta;
- Lessons learned from the Mekong and Ganges Brahmaputra Meghna delta plan;
- An Egyptian perspective on lessons learned from the implementation of the JCAR project.

The session will feature a range of speakers and an engaging panel discussion with distinguished experts, including representatives from: the Paris School of Economics, the World Bank, Egypt’s Hydraulics Research Institute, the University of East Anglia, the Bangladesh University of Technology, and Deltares.
