About the session

The session will explore methods for assessing the root causes of coastal erosion and ecosystem degradation (before the implementation of NbS), making use of abiotic conditions for the successful implementation of NbS, and monitoring for long-term robustness of NbS measures (after the implementation of NbS).

Case studies and topics

The session will explore methods for assessing the root causes of coastal erosion and ecosystem degradation (before the implementation of NbS), making use of abiotic conditions for the successful implementation of NbS, and monitoring for long-term robustness of NbS measures (after the implementation of NbS).

To illustrate challenges and best practices, several case studies from around the world will be featured, including: Colombia, Guyana, Surinam, and Egypt. Topics will include:

  • An overview of Colombia’s practices and main challenges in NbS projects;
  • Mangrove habitat restoration along the coast of Guyana and Surinam, with a particular focus on utilising abiotic conditions for NbS; and
  • Egypt’s IZCM experience with NbS, focusing on beach nourishments and increasing dune heights.

Speakers

After the presentations, there will be time for an interactive Q&A with the speakers.

  • Marta Faneca Sànchez, Senior Hydrologist at Deltares and IPDC Country Coordinator Colombia (Moderator)
  • Jorge Augusto Acosta Rivera, Columbian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development
  • Mary Luz Cañon Paez, Columbian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development
  • Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali, Executive Project Manager at Egypt’s ECCADP Project
