An IPDC online session featuring the Coastal Hazard Wheel as a universal framework for coastal adaptation planning worldwide.

Join us online

Join us on Wednesday 11 February 2026 from 15:00 – 16:30 CET for an IPDC Online Session focused on the Coastal Hazard Wheel (CHW) – a practical and universal framework supporting coastal hazard assessment and adaptation planning across diverse national and geographic contexts.

During this session, experts will introduce the Coastal Hazard Wheel framework, demonstrate its online application and spatial data environment, and share experiences from independent national applications in Indonesia and Colombia.

Register to join the online session:

The session will be available in English and Spanish (Spanish translation provided).

About the session

Coastal areas around the world face a wide range of hazards, from erosion and flooding to salinisation and ecosystem degradation. The Coastal Hazard Wheel (CHW) provides a structured way to classify coastlines, identify dominant hazards, and explore suitable management and adaptation options.

This IPDC Online Session will show how the Coastal Hazard Wheel supports:

  • Systematic coastal classification
  • Rapid, first-order hazard and adaptation assessments
  • Communication and decision support across disciplines
  • Application at scales ranging from global screening to national and local planning

The session combines conceptual insight with hands-on examples, including a live demonstration of the Coastal Hazard Wheel App and reflections from national case studies.

Programme

1. The Coastal Hazard Wheel: framework and core logic

Lars Rosendahl Appelquist – Founding Head, Coastal Hazard Wheel initiative

  • What is the Coastal Hazard Wheel?
  • Universal coastal classification and multi-hazard logic
  • Linking coastal types, dominant hazards, and management options
  • Supporting screening, planning, and communication
  • Illustrative example: global-to-national scale application (FAO SIDS coastal assessment)

2. From framework to implementation: the Coastal Hazard Wheel App and online data environment

Gerrit Hendriksen – Senior Specialist Spatial Data, Deltares

  • Overview of the Coastal Hazard Wheel App
  • Online spatial data environment and system architecture
  • Operationalising CHW logic through spatial data
  • Zooming into coastal locations and carrying out rapid assessments

3. National applications and case experiences

Independent applications of the Coastal Hazard Wheel in national contexts, including:

Indonesia

  • Renny Laksmita Ningsih – M.Sc. Physical Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada
  • Bachtiar W. Mutaqin – Associate Professor, Universitas Gadjah Mada

Colombia

  • Nelson Rangel-Buitrago – Professor, Universidad del Atlántico
  • Reflections from applied research and coastal adaptation practice

4. Discussion and Q&A
